The Cedarsong Way is a compassion scaffolded, inquiry-based teaching method developed by Erin Kenny over the past two decades. The Cedarsong Way is a specific method of teaching science that is distinguished by use of an outdoor classroom, child-driven flow learning, child-inspired emergent curriculum and inquiry-based teaching.  This method encourages children’s natural love of science resulting in a deep understanding and superior retention of natural science principles, while promoting advanced social skills, teamwork and cooperation, and a high level of emotional intelligence. The Cedarsong Way can be applied to any existing environmental education program with any age group.

Training & Certification

There are three options of The Cedarsong Way Forest Kindergarten Teacher Training. The trainings are generally booked at least two months in advance however it is possible there may be openings before that.

Space is limited in residential trainings since only six trainees are allowed on site at any one time.

Background checks are REQUIRED for residential trainings.

Option 1

Residential Training at Cedarsong Nature School

These four day trainings include direct observation of the Cedarsong Forest Kindergarten in action. Erin Kenny will teach you about the underlying educational philosophies and nature pedagogy of the Cedarsong Forest Kindergarten program, distinguished by its commitment to total nature immersion, child-led flow learning, child-inspired emergent curriculum and inquiry-based teaching. You will learn how to build a Forest Kindergarten program and make it a success by understanding the most critical elements such as appropriate clothing, building parent community, the importance of the right teachers and risk management, i.e. acceptable risks and hazardous assessment.

Each participant will receive The Cedarsong Way Teacher Training Packet which includes a copy of Erin Kenny’s book “Forest Kindergartens: The Cedarsong Way”, The Cedarsong Teaching and Program Guide, Erin Kenny and Robin Rogers’ book “Nature Notes Journal: Documenting Your Emergent Curriculum” and The Cedarsong hour-long documentary DVD.

Option 2

Bringing Forest Kindergarten principles into a pre-existing program

Training at your site with your staff. These trainings are tailored to your site, your staff and your program. Erin Kenny will travel to you and teach you and your staff about the underlying educational philosophies and nature pedagogy of the Cedarsong Forest Kindergarten program, distinguished by its commitment to nature immersion, interest-led flow learning, emergent curriculum and inquiry-based teaching style. You will learn how to make your Forest Kindergarten program a success by understanding the most critical elements such as appropriate clothing, building parent community, the importance of the right teachers and risk management, i.e. acceptable risks and hazardous assessment. Erin will also evaluate your site and make suggestions for maximizing its potential.

Each training includes The Cedarsong Way Teacher Training Packet which consists of Erin Kenny’s book “Forest Kindergartens: The Cedarsong Way”, The Cedarsong Teaching and Program Guide, Erin Kenny and Robin Rogers’ book “Nature Notes Journal: Documenting Your Emergent Curriculum” and The Cedarsong Way hour-long documentary DVD.

Cost:
$2000 for 2 six hour days plus airfare, transportation and lodging. Flow of the 2 days can be determined by hosting organization. Additional time can be added for $100 per hour.

Option 3

Home Study

The Cedarsong Way Teacher Training Home Study Packet includes a copy of Erin Kenny’s book “Forest Kindergartens: The Cedarsong Way”, The Cedarsong Teaching and Program Guide, Erin Kenny and Robin Rogers’ book “Nature Notes Journal: Documenting Your Emergent Curriculum” and The Cedarsong Way hour-long documentary DVD. There is also the option of a phone consultation with Erin.

Cost:
$125 for the complete home study course.
$75 for a one-hour phone consultation with Erin
